WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF CAPPUCCINO, CAFE LATTE & FLAT WHITE

You always order cappuccinos at the cafe? Do you know the difference between cappuccino, cafe latte and flat white which are popular drinks in cafes?

Cappuccino, latte and flat white are popular coffee drink menus in many cafes or coffee shops. all look similar but have their own differences.

All three have two main ingredients, milk or textured milk and espresso which are blended in different ways. Served in different containers and with different rules.

Basically, the difference between cappuccino, latte and flat white can be seen from the comparison of the use of the two ingredients, which is milk and espresso.

1. Cappuccino

Cappuccino is a traditional Italian drink. The name 'cappuccino' comes from 'caphucin', the hat on the Italian priest's robe. This is because the foam looks like the hat.

This popular coffee brew is known for its layer of froth, which is usually garnished with cocoa powder. However, what makes this drink unique is not just the milk froth. The cappuccino blend is made with a comparison of ingredients.

1/3 Espresso Coffee, 1/3 Milk, 1/3 Milk Foam.

In a cappuccino, the coffee will taste thicker and tastier. This is because the cappuccino is only mixed with 50% milk and the rest is espresso.

2. Cafe Latte

Whereas cafe latte has a blend of espresso only 25%. This makes cafe latte has a milky or creamy taste that is much stronger than cappuccino, so the taste of cappuccino and latte is of course not the same.

Cafe latte concoction made with a comparison of ingredients :

Double shot espresso (approx. 60 ml).

Steamed milk, usually nearly a cup full.

Micro foam is only about 1 cm thick at the top layer.

When viewed from the way it is made, capppucino is relatively easy to make. This is because the ratio used to make a cappuccino is quite clear, that is 50: 50. However, in a cafe latte the ratio is 25: 75 for espresso and mixed milk.

3. Flat White

Flat whites are a drink that tends to be subjective, and itsvariety is depended on which country or café you are visiting (except for the UK, as the UK have their own special "concoction" of flat whites). Broadly speaking, flat white consists of textured milk and espresso. Some baristas may use smaller amounts of milk than lattes.

Generally, flat white is served in two variations :

  • No foam. This variation is the one most used in many cafes where the espresso (in the standard shot) is combined with the steamed milk.

  • With foam. Meanwhile, this variation is quite common, especially by coffee shop specialists. This method really demands expertise from the barista, because when making the textured milk, the barista has to make a micro foam that is really smooth but you can feel it in the mouth.

This is the difference between cappuccino, latte and flat white. Hopefully this information is useful and can be used when hanging out at coffee shops
